Nogui, Doña Luz, and their daughter on the beach in Tamarindo

Nogui, Doña Luz & their daughter, Helen — Tamarindo, 1970s

Nogui Acosta opened this bar in 1974, when Tamarindo was a small town at the end of an unpaved road — no running water, no phones, no electricity. His wife, Doña Luz, ran the kitchen, cooking everything from scratch: red beans, rice, hot puffy potato chips, lobster in butter and garlic. Fishermen weighed and sold their catch right here, and in the 1970s the floor was littered with white pukka shells from the local trade.

Half a century later, it's still run with the same spirit: good fish, honest prices, and a front-row seat for the sunset.
